Pan werthwyd Gwynfaes Sion am £4,500 yn yr arwerthiant yn Llanelwedd yn 1997, llwyddodd i gyrraedd y pris uchaf am ebolion 3 oed. Ers hynny, prynwyd Sion gan Graham a Mary Schofield. Cyhoeddwyd yr erthygl isod yn Welsh Ponies & Cobs Magazine ISSUE 20. Rydym wedi cadw chwaer llawn iddo, sef Gwynfaes Branwen, yn y fridfa.
At £4,500 Gwynfaes Sion was the top priced 3 year old colt at the 1997 Builth Sales. Since then he has been brought by Graham and Mary Schofield. Below is an article that appeared in the Welsh Ponies & Cobs Magazine ISSUE 20 which charts his eventful career since then. We have retained his full sister, Gwynfaes Branwen at the stud.
GWYNFAES SION SHINES AT WEMBLEY
It was
at the 2000 Builth Wells Sales that Graham and Mary Schofield and their showing
partners Janice and Peter Clough first saw GWYNFAES SION, a quality black Section
D by HOREB EUROS 27999 and although not really looking for another cob, as the
Schofield's have a line of good young stock growing on, he was one that could
not be ignored!
SION was purchased at a later date and went to Janice and Peter for producing. Initially kept as a stallion SION was later gelded after nearly wrecking the horsebox at his first small show but was soon back in work going to his first real show, The New Forest, putting on a fine display of walking on his hind legs but still managing a 4th place out of 37 turnouts in the Concours d'elegance.
His next shows of Midhurst and Ponies UK were good education, he improved every time out although his mind was 'still not on the job'.
Then came Chatsworth County Fair which Janice had decided was going to be his last show of the season, unless he did something really special. SION gladly obliged after completing a five mile drive on the Saturday finished 1st and Champion. Sunday at Chatsworth saw new judges and a Private Driving class with an even larger entry thanks to the class being a Wembley Qualifer, ending the day 2nd and Reserve Champion and gaining the Wembley Qualifier Janice commented 'I think its beginning to come together now, he was a star on the drive yesterday and I'm really pleased with him today, qualifying for Wembley at his 4th show seems pretty special to me'.
A shortage of shows to keep him going meant a long trip down south to Aldershot where two 1st's and a 2nd place were gained followed by a 4th at Romsey and 2nd at Leicester Area BDS Show.
Now the big day had arrived and it was back down south for HOYS only his 8th show in harness and although his first time indoors he behaved impeccably and after putting on a good display was placed 5th in the Harness Horse of the Year and also being the highest placed registered Section D in the driving class put him forward to the Brightwells Welsh Centenary class. Janice and Sion went on to represent the driving fraternity in the evening Championship finals on Sunday evening.
Looking back on a short but eventful year Graham and Janice said. 'This horse has had 12 months education in 3 months and after an initial hiccup we can't believe how much he has improved, although we still believe we haven't even touched on his true potential yet but when we do, we hope you're going to see something really special, so roll on next year.'
Of course by now Janice and Sion have had unprecedented success up and down the country and have qualified for HOYS for the last three years. We wish them every success this year. Good luck to you both!

Here is the second filly we have from Branwen and Culhwch. She's bay with four white socks and as you would expect she's a real character and extremely friendly. She possesses all the qualities that we want at Gwynfaes. Gwenddydd is truely a show quality filly and has that x-factor which is so difficult to describe. Reluctantly, we sold her at the October sales for £3200. We wish Etienne & Catherine Stevens of the Gui Nel Stud, France, her new owners all the best for the future.
